ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines how the practice of school-based ecological consultation can promote social justice and the rights of all children. It reviews of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) applied to educational practices. The chapter defines socially just psychological and educational practices informed by the CRC. Ecological consultation is presented as a means to promote all students' rights. The chapter presents a public health model of ecological consultation intended to promote positive development, reduce risks for negative outcomes, and ameliorate deficits. The chapter documents two examples of ecological consultation using the Public Health Problem-Solving Model with schools and district personnel to affect systems-level change that promotes social justice by increasing equitable access to educational opportunities. Ecological consultation, practiced in collaboration with many partners across groups and communities, offers the opportunity to promote voices that have often been ignored and realize children's rights to development, protection, and participation in educational settings.
