ABSTRACT

This chapter presents Gay Craig's passion for learning. Gay's study about river is incorporated into the ecology unit that she has taught for 15 years. It is now a tradition and a regular part of the curriculum and has earned solid community and administrative support. There is nothing more exciting than when a kid comes up to Gay with their calculator and their probe and is actually registering a number that is reasonable. She says that when it fits into the water quality parameters or they find calcium with the color comparator. They did not have any idea there was calcium in that water, and there it was showed. The color changed. They get very excited about it. It is this excitement that she believes leads students to be stewards of the places they live. Students share their data with local watershed organizations. The big picture fills her criteria for place-based education.
