ABSTRACT

Teachers can use reading strategies to help students make sense of what they are reading. Pre-reading, during-reading, and post-reading strategies can greatly help middle and secondary students when they are reading a complex text on the Internet. Middle and secondary social studies teachers can use pre-reading strategies to help students comprehend the primary and secondary sources that they will be reading on the Internet. Teachers can use pre-reading strategies before students investigate topics online. During-reading strategies are aimed at helping students with vocabulary and comprehending difficult text. The discussion web requires students to write down their findings from the text after they have read both sides of the argument on the Internet. The Open Secrets Internet webpage, sponsored by the Center for Responsive Politics, has a great deal of data that tracks the origins of campaign contributions to finance the elections of politicians across the country.
