ABSTRACT

Henderson Waves opened in 2008. It has since received the Singapore President's Design Award, the Design Award of the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA). The brief of Henderson Waves bridge is simple enough: to link two ridge summits with a continuous plane. Its site is part of a chain of hills stretching from Mount Faber Park through Telok Blangah Hill and Kent Ridge Park on the southern coast of the Island of Singapore. On the landing end, the structure bends gently towards the east and wraps around the peak of the hill. It then reconnects with an existing ring road, creating a continuous circulation loop before heading west towards the next milestone of the master plan. The seemingly idiosyncratic form of Henderson Waves meets several challenges at once: in order to cross the gap between springing point and land without going over the prescribed slope, the bridge bends in plan while rising steadily.
