ABSTRACT

The brief of Henderson Waves bridge is simple enough: to link two ridge summits with a continuous plane. Its site is part of a chain of hills stretching from Mount Faber Park through Telok Blangah Hill and Kent Ridge Park on the southern coast of the Island of Singapore. The proposal implements the vision of the Southern Ridges Master Plan, which calls for people to walk or cycle through nine kilometers of hills and natural parks, blessed with unique panoramic views. The international bridge design consultation launched in 2003 proposed two alternative sites of intervention and called for proposals of drastically different size. Given the extreme relief and dramatic qualities of the setting, we opted for the “big leap” of Henderson Crossing. On the first site visit in July 2004, we discovered a site buried in secondary equatorial undergrowth and marveled at its beauty.
