ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book discusses the topic of girls, physical education and gender from an activist perspective. It explores that the "same old story" about girls and physical education has been circulating for more than thirty years. The book discusses new ways of working with girls in physical education in terms of the common characteristics of the published activist work to date. It considers three issues that have implications for future research working from an activist perspective: balancing advocacy and action, the challenge of scaling up research and the prospects for developing a pedagogical model for working with girls from an activist approach. The requirement for girls to be physically active in the process of coming to value the physically active life acts as a counter-point to concerns that the pragmatic character of an activist approach might jeopardize physical education's place in the curriculum.
