ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines basic management theory and describes human resource management. It describes the role of the coach as a manager. The chapter identifies strategies the coach can use to maintain group control. It also identifies situations in which conflict may arise and explain how they can be resolved. The classical view of management theory was viewed by the behaviourist movement as a rather rigid perspective, and the behaviourists argued that 'organization structures should be tempered with flexibility and a greater concern for employee involvement'. As well as having a good grounding in management theory the coach should also have a basic understanding of human resource management. The chapter discusses the coach as a manager a stage further by identifying specific management tasks and responsibilities that may be required of the coach. The reality is that conflict is unavoidable for even the most careful and passive person, and unfortunately conflict permeates all areas of our lives.
