ABSTRACT

This chapter describes anatomical and physiological function and explores terms associated with body movement. It also describes the structure and function of skeleton, muscles, heart, lungs and digestive system. The chapter focuses the different energy systems and explains how the performer should hydrate and fuel for performance. In order to prepare the performer physically and implement fitness and training programmes, the coach should have a sound knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and understand how the body works. The anaerobic system supplies energy for around 20 seconds to around 2 minutes. The aerobic system works when enough oxygen is being supplied to the muscles, and the body is working at a level that the demands for oxygen and fuel are met by the body's intake. The coach, while having a good general knowledge of hydration and rehydration, should seek the advice of a nutritionist to calculate individual differences in fluid consumption and replenishment in a more detailed fashion.
