ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the role of the coach in developing fitness training programmes and explores the principles and components of fitness training. It identifies and describes types of fitness training. The chapter describes the integration of multi-directional activities into fitness programmes and explains strength and conditioning. Fitness training can be integrated into the overall training programme and should be designed to maximize the physical development of the performers. The coach should integrate a fitness training programme into the overall season plan, and within that plan there will be opportunities to identify appropriate points in the plan to conduct fitness testing. The mnemonic SPORT is widely used for a set of principles to follow in order to train effectively, and should be considered by the coach in designing and implementing a fitness training programme. Different types of fitness training exist that can enhance development of the components of fitness training.
