ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the coach education process and explains coach mentoring. It discusses international coach education structures. Coach education and development is central to the professionalization of sports coaching. Moreover, coach education and development is essential in order for a critical mass of coaches to be harnessed in the UK to support athletes at whatever level they perform. 'Mentoring is a powerful tool in the education and development of sports coaches at all levels, and successful coach education programmes change the behaviour and practice of coaches, whether they are novices or international coaches'. Mentoring is also a one-to-one relationship supporting the development of another coach, and should be a two-way symbiotic process and relationship that both the mentor and mentee should contribute to. The mentoring process provides a more structured way to guide a coach through what can be a challenging and daunting learning process.
