ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the child protection issues and the role of the coach. It highlights the issues coaching children and the considerations when coaching disabled performers. The chapter discusses the issues coaching dangerous sports. The coach should make themselves familiar with child protection issues, and at the same time not put themself in a position where allegations could be levelled against them. Coaches play a major role in ensuring that children have a positive experience in sport, and at the same time enhancing and developing their social skills. Two competing views attempt to rationalize whether it is ethical to prevent an individual from participating in dangerous sports, which are libertarianism and paternalism. The coaching of dangerous sports brings its own challenges for the coach, and there are a range of ethical considerations that the coach will have to account for.
