ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the impact that coaching has on performance and highlights coaching contexts models. It also explores the role of high-performance organizations. The chapter discusses the examples of coaches working in the high-performance environment. Coaching has a significant impact upon sports performance, and is about improving performance at all levels. A coach can work at differing levels from the foundation to the high-performance coaching level. The coach can also work at different levels at the same time, which will depend on the sport they are coaching, and also whether they are in a part-time or full-time coaching position. A range of models have been provided in order to explain the type, level and contexts in which coaches work and serve as a pictorial representation of the structures and processes at work. High-performance sport organizations exist in the United Kingdom to service and develop elite sport.
