ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the coaching behaviour and describes its leadership styles, differing coaching styles and differing learning styles. It focuses the concepts of adaptation and differentiation and also explains communication and instruction, effective demonstration, effective observation, feedback and coaching effectiveness. A coaching style will vary from person to person, and situation to situation as the coach adapts their behaviour to meet the specific needs of the performers. In order to account for the visual learning student, the chapter shows the interaction between the coach and athlete in terms of Peter Honey and Alan Mumford's four learning styles, signifying that the coach is responsible for accounting for all four learning styles. A strategy in optimizing communication between the athletes and the coach is the use of team-building exercises. Sports coaching academics have sought to define coaching effectiveness, and what makes an effective coach.
