ABSTRACT

Almost half the information patients hear is forgotten; moreover, the more information presented, the lower the proportion recalled correctly.3 With the impact of anxiety on retention,4 we can see how important it is to help patients feel less anxious, especially when the information concerns a life-threatening medical condition. Most attempts to increase recall focus on the medium of presentation (e.g., audio recordings, written materials, visual aids) or strategies used, either cognitive (e.g., rehearsal) or interpersonal (e.g., personalized teaching).5 The physical environment is overlooked. How can patients feel more in control and less anxious in consultation and exam spaces?
