ABSTRACT
We live in interesting and confusing times. On the one hand we are surrounded by authoritative rhetoric in favour of free markets, reductions in trade barriers and the value of competition. On the other hand we are witness to ongoing environmental issues, a persistent fi nancial crisis and social destabilisation in various corners of the world. The link between economic development and environmental and social issues appears inevitable, but the question remains – where do we go from here?
