ABSTRACT

Critical theorists are concerned with understanding power, particularly oppression, or the exercise of power, by one entity for its own benefit over another entity. For critical theorists, the goal of theory is to develop/find ways to change power relationships and overcome oppression. Critical theorists have identified various approaches to power or influence. Critical philosophies/theories from this time focused on initiating change and freedom in society, which were of the utmost importance to Hegelians. A key area in critical theory is the thinking of Karl Marx. His works have greatly shaped critical theory. When Karl Marx was young his father, Heinrich, gave a speech in which he suggested that a benevolent ruler should support social and political reforms. Persuasive power is when a person is able to use communicative abilities to compel someone to do something. Politicians and lawyers often persuade people to do things with their communicative abilities.
