ABSTRACT

Spirituality is an inner personal quality. In other words, a definition of spirituality can only be a broad, general statement and a starting point from which most of its particulars can be illuminated. Everyone has spirituality and has the potential of developing it whether they are religious or not. Religion exists as an external entity. Rothman offers a slightly different definition that emphasized transcendence. She defines spirituality as an awareness of transcendence or a connection beyond self to something greater. Some immigrants from the Far East and other regions of the world and others who are Americans may believe in such spirits. In Christianity the Bible is the most sacred text and includes the Old Testament describing Jewish teachings and history and a describing the life, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus and the spreading of his Gospel that followed. Mystery, manifestation of spirituality, can be important to some clients and easily overlooked by many practitioners.
