ABSTRACT

The three phases of post-production are: archiving, editing, and finishing. These phases are undertaken in sequential order with priority given to the task of archiving. Maintaining an archive is essential because if the images are not safe you will have nothing to show for your work. The next phase is editing, which is a subjective, creative process that separates out a few key images from the noise of the larger group. Once a selection of images has been made the finishing process can begin. Finishing is equivalent to the work a master printer does in a darkroom to bring out the maximum richness from a negative. In our case the negative is a Raw file which needs to be processed into a tiff file suitable for publication. Once the Raw files have been processed, detail work such as compositing and local corrections will complete the image.
