ABSTRACT

103The day the Greenlandic town of Maniitsoq was chosen as the site of the large-scale aluminium smelter, the town itself was buzzing with cheerful citizens. People were driving around town, honking the horns and waving flags out the car windows. To celebrate the occasion, the bakery even made a special cake dedicated to the American Arm Alcoa which is going to build and run the factory. Indeed, the factory was perceived to be the (perhaps last) chance to save the town from turning into a place with a high rate of unemployment.
