ABSTRACT
This chapter explores how people across the world think about environmental change and how they act upon the perception of past, present and future opportunities. ANTEREA and MWARIA live with their children on one of the sparse plots of land left on the densely populated island of Tarawa. They have lived here since they finished their degrees and moved to the urban centre of Kiribati for work. They are one of the fortunate families who have been able to invest in a rainwater tank. When Anterea retired, he used his savings on a rainwater tank so that he would be better able to provide clean water to his family. Besides the rainwater tank, the family only has a well where they draw water for washing and cooking. Sometimes when extended family members run out of water, they will pay Anterea and Mwaria a visit with various containers, sometimes just a bottle, sometimes oil drums, and fill them up with rainwater.
