ABSTRACT

The opportunity to experience true transcendence doubtless occurs much more often than we commonly realize. It is likely that the authors are exposed to synchronistic events on a daily basis without noticing them. Perhaps the most tragic failure of human consciousness is that it so easily misses what is untoward and unusual. They are so focused on their immediate tasks and projects that they pay scant attention to what is going on at the fringes. Occasionally, though, a cluster of synchronicities surrounds them so auspiciously and convincingly that it grabs their attention. They are astonished by the sound of invisible wings and perhaps shudder at the uncanny presences in their midst. Moments in life that are charged with intense emotion are often the occasion for such vivid synchronicities. When they stand squarely in the presence of death, for example, especially of a loved one, their senses seem to be more attuned to hints of transcendence.
