ABSTRACT

In the following example, there are two nouns, each of which follows the word ‘only’ in English. But different contexts decide the proper use of the word ‘only’ in Chinese.

㱑✊ᴢܜ⫳ⱘϝϾܓᄤ䛑㒧ီњˈৃᰃা᳝໻ܓᄤ᳝ϔϾᄽᄤˈ᠔ҹ 䖭Ͼᄽᄤᰃᴢܜ⫳ଃϔⱘᄭᄤˈᴢܜ⫳कߚᅴ⠅ҪDŽ Suīrán Lǐ xiānsheng de sān ge érzi dōu jiéhūn le, kěshì zhǐyǒu dà érzi yǒu yī ge háizi, suǒyǐ zhè ge háizi shì Lǐ xiānsheng wéiyī de sūnzi, Lǐ xiānsheng shífēn chǒngài tā. Although all three of Mr Li’s sons are married, only his eldest son has a child; so this child is Mr Li’s only grandchild; Mr Li really loves and spoils him.
