ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors believe guidelines are necessary to promote mutual support and understanding among staff. It is necessary to insure quality care for the terminally ill. These Guidelines can serve as a unifying content core for the assessment, planning, organizing and implementing of thanatology programs in any health care agency that is geared to meet the special needs of dying patients and their families. Guidelines of care established ensure continuity of care for terminal patients. This requires a combination of guidelines for patients, guidelines for family and guidelines for staff. The holistic concept of care requires that each individual be cared for according to needs presented. Interpersonal relationships between patients and staff are necessary to maintain continuity of care. Consideration for visitation in the hospital environment should be permitted for everyone special to the patient, despite age or gender.
