ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the positive health as a long-term process, which is referred as the wellness, the opposite of chronic illness. It also explains the occasions on which congruence is established between ongoing psycho physiological processes and the demands of the setting to yield high levels of functioning and it is called as optimum function, a momentary, situation-specific glimpse of wellness. Wellness has been defined as heightened resistance to disease. Selye considered the wellness, a state of optimum balance between forces requiring the organism to respond, and the ability of the organism to do so. A peak experience is like a momentary burst of wellness in the experiential domain, and, as such, may be the psychological signature of optimum function. Peak experiences may contribute to the development of self-actualization. The ability to appropriately direct and control attention according to situational demands is a critical element of athletic performance.
