ABSTRACT

In many respects the present chapter represents a sequel to that of Roberts and Grant (1976). In that paper we outlined a theoretical conception of pigeon short-term memory (STM) as it evolved in the course of our empirical studies. It is my intent here to consider some of the work conducted following the appearance of that paper, with particular attention given to the implications of more recent findings for the model of STM espoused in 1976. Following initial description of that model, with its emphasis on trace strength, consideration will be given to more recent data that appear both to challenge that conception and to suggest the operation of certain previously unidentified processes in pigeon STM. The chapter concludes with a discussion of an alternative theoretical conception of pigeon STM.
