This anthology contains an abundant representation of the finest literature produced during the Middle English period. The term Middle English is awkward but convenient. for it identifies one distinct phase in the development of the English language (discussed below in the linguistic introduction) and also applies to a distinct epoch in the history of English culture that began with the Norman invasion of 1066 and ended at about the time that Caxton introduced printing in England. in 1476.
