Implementing Teaching Strategies
John Bates at Georgia Southern University told his introductory psychology students that he had telepathic powers and demonstrated these "psychic" abilities by transmitting images into the minds of students and a confederate. Students generated alternative hypotheses to account for the observed phenomena and suggested ways to test their hypotheses. This article describes how to perform the psychic acts and outlines the hypothesis-testing activity. The demonstration encourages greater scientific skepticism and promotes enthusiastic class participation.
