Direct and Computational Mechanisms in Spatial Updating
Pages 4

Experiment 1 investigated which of these mechanisms is used in spatial updating by asking subjects not to update their positions when walking without vision. If updating is achieved by deliberate cognitive processing, this request should pose no problems: all that is required is that the computations are not carried out. If, however, updating occurs directly and automatically, the subjects will be unable to avoid updating their positions, and should therefore have difficulty with the task.
