ABSTRACT
The origins of language remain controversial. It is held by many that language is unique to the genotype of our species. By implication, even our nearest living relatives – the great apes (Pongidae) – should have no capacity for it. In contrast, the view advanced in this chapter is that language is neither monolithic nor totally beyond the competence of the chimpanzee (Pan).
