ABSTRACT

This chapter will provide a general framework for understanding and working with spiritual issues in psychotherapy, with particular attention to the ongoing evolution of the construction of self in relation to others and in relation to God. The chapter concludes with an in-session exer cise, which assists clients in gaining more conscious awareness of their personal evolution of self in relation to God and also assists in deconstructing the client’s experience of God in a man ner that separates the detrimental aspects of the relationships with parental figures from their experience of God. This exercise can also assist the client in developing more conscious aware ness of the meaning-making process they are engaged in as they define a self in relation to others and God.
