ABSTRACT

Administrators and teachers have been challenged by student disci pline problems since the beginning of public education in the United

States. In fact, one of the earliest education textbooks was on classroom management (Bagley, 1907). Recently, efforts to address the problem of student discipline in schools have taken on a greater sense of urgency because of the increases in aggressive and violent behavior. The recent schoolyard murders in Mississippi, Kentucky, California, Pennsylva nia, Oregon, and Colorado have focused the nation’s attention on the se verity of discipline problems.
