The Chorus in New Tragedy

In both these odes, and in the parody, Euripides is evidently doing something to interest his audience, but presenting this directly and not through the drama; not as an interesting turn given to the plot or colour to the treatment, but as a separate decoration. This is worth a moment's consideration, especially as in all the non-tragic plays (except the Alcestis and the Ion) the chorus is given more or lessdecorative and' undramatic' odes like these two in the Electra.
