Memory, emotion and dementia

INTRODUCTION The issue of failing memory within the dementias appears to be the locus of loss and torment for sufferers and carers alike. In more recent years, this area of concern has been positively addressed by theoreticians and/or practitioners (Feil, 1985, 1992; Jones and Burns, 1992; Kitwood, 1990a, 1990b; Kitwood and Bredin, 1992; Miesen, 1992; Woods et al., 1992). Their work, and others, has led to a variety of interventions designed to restore personhood and well-being in those older members of our society who live in the bewildering world of dementia.
