'Snoezelen': a new way of communicating with the severely demented elderly

INTRODUCTION About five years ago, action-oriented activities were offered to demented elderly residents in our department: flower arranging, craftwork, collagemaking and physical exercise. However, it soon became apparent that these activities made impossible demands on the residents: they walked away or fell asleep. The materials used in the activities were cuddled, touched, smelled and examined, both visually and aurally, independent of the goal of the activity.
