In search of the best environment: results of five experiments in the institutional organization of care for demented people

INTRODUCTION The ever-increasing numbers of demented people encourage us to question the hitherto existing forms of institutional care for the demented. It might well be that the historically developed institutions do not always provide the best answer to the need for care, in terms of quality as well as costbenefit. At present, there is a widespread conviction that larger changes in the policy of care should not be effected without having tried them out and evaluated the results.
