Caring for a demented family member at home: objective observation and subjective evaluation of the burden

The central role played by family members The increase in the nurnber of elderly people, and, in the nurnber of elderly

people who need care, coincides with a decrease of the number of family members who are able to take on the care. Factors that influence this une qual development of supply and demand are, among others, the increasing longevity of people, the decreasing number of children per family, the reduction of the number of three-generation families that share a joint hQusehold, a wider geographic distribution of family members and a development towards equal opportunities for men and women, as a result of which more women are engaged in the labour force.
