A carer's group for families of patients with dementia
INTRODUCTION This chapter describes an initiative in work with the informal carers of elderly mentally ill people; group work with carers. These carers, most of whom were related to the mentally frail people, looked after their relatives on a regular day-to-day basis except when the relatives were attending a day hospital. Most of these relatives or patients, as it would seem easier to call them, were dementia sufferers. The groups were a form of planned intervention by the NHS hospital and had specific objectives. They were held weekly at the day hospital for set lengths of time.
