ABSTRACT

A ugust Kleinzahler's poetry, with its linguistic resourcefulnessand arresting cheerfulness, is immediately appealing to a wide range of readers. His approach to his material feels at once generous to his subjects and flattering to the reader. There is an atmosphere of effortlessness and abundance, as if there will always be more occasions and more poems. Kleinzahler's early books-The Sausage-Master ofMinsk (1977), A Calendar ofAirs (1978), Storm over Hackensack (1985), On johnny's Time (1988), and Dainties and Viands (1989)-are out of print. Earthquake Weather (1989) was nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award. A volume of new and selected poems, Like Cities, Like Storms, was published by Picador in Australia in 1992. His most recent books are Red Sauce, Whiskey and Snow (1995) and Green Sees Things in Waves (1998). In Live from the Hong Kong Nile Club: Poems, 1975-1990 (2000), Kleinzahler brings together poems from the earlier collections Storm over Hackensack and Earthquake Weather.
