ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of the issues surrounding the presence of lesbian women and gay men in the field of education. It explains general information regarding the extent and effects of occupational discrimination, followed by a discussion of the relevant legal issues and court cases. The chapter reviews professional and educational issues and deals with recommendations regarding individual, systemic, and societal action and changes that must occur in order to address the difficulties encountered by lesbian/gay educators. General occupational discrimination against gay and lesbian people has been documented by several researchers. E. L. Hart pointed out that sexuality represents much more than sex, that it is integral to identity, social organization, and culture, and therefore something that clearly belongs within the purview of necessary education. Visibility of sexual minority people and issues will continue to be critical to social and educational change.
