ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes an exercise that focuses on the positive aspects of life. This provides a basis for developing personal strengths and an attitude of "I can". Focusing on difficulties and how each overcame them enables the group to look at pain as a part of the human condition. The leader encourages sharing, listening, and the giving of compliments. Sometimes a very negative person may want to turn the exercise into a gripe or complaint session, and the leader should be prepared to redirect the focus if this happens. Be sure to close with some powerful statements about the much strength that the different members have, and how pain is a common part of life. The leader find it helpful to briefly point out that humans often move to a higher state of life by working through their pain, challenges, and the existential aspects of life.
