ABSTRACT

By taking on the roles of characters from the popular television show, Cheers, participants have the opportunity to reveal traits they value, admire, or dislike in themselves or in others. The participants' choices of particular Cheers characters can be indications of how they perceive the traits and behaviors of themselves and others. This exercise is also an opportunity for participants to express strengths they possess as well as needs they may have. The trainer could ask questions of the different characters and have them respond in the way that they think the Cheers character would respond. Also ask participants how they think they are like their Cheers characters and how they think they are different. Give attention to the comfort level of the group in terms of self-disclosure. The trainer could select two or three people from the group to interact in certain situations as the characters they have selected.
