ABSTRACT

This exercise helps group members to identify personal values and to explore how they are different from and similar to others' values. More time may be necessary depending upon the depth of the discussion of values and issues related to values. Identifying personal values is important to self-concept as well as to family/group identity. It helps to enhance group communication as participants share among them. It is important to avoid allowing the exercise to become too negative or conflict-oriented. If participants cannot or will not eliminate items from their lists, the trainer should randomly delete the appropriate number of items from their lists. Trainers should spend ample time processing participant's feelings as a result of the activity. Anger, fear, and resentment are common feelings brought out by this exercise. It can be a valuable exercise when working with groups and/or families who are experiencing conflict due to value differences.
