ABSTRACT

This exercise suggested to dyads/couples that who are experiencing considerable conflict. It comes under the category of paradoxical intention. Certain nights of the week are assigned as fight nights. The exercise helps to introduce humor as a problem-solving tool. The trainer should be knowledgeable and comfortable using paradoxical methods before using this exercise. Relationships often come to an impasse, and the people involved do not know what to do to break the impasse; often it becomes an ongoing argument or power struggle. The exercise shows the participants how to resolve such power struggles by deliberately planning a time to argue. The exercise can be used successfully with any dyad or group who finds themselves in continual power struggles. It is especially helpful with husbands and wives, parents and children, and parents and adolescents.
