ABSTRACT

This structured exercise improves listening and expressiveness in emotionally charged situations. It helps individuals recognize the self-defeating nature of the typical fighting style, which emphasizes personal gain rather than listening and conflict resolution. Most people approach conflict resolution with limited skills and a mindset of "either I win or I lose". This approach limits the outcome of conflict situations. The exercise is to have the two parties hold hands and look each other in the eye as each takes a turn stating his/her issues. The trainer should be aware that at times participants may bring to training sessions issues which are emotionally loaded to the point that they require outside individual professional help. In such situations, the trainer should be prepared to make a referral or schedule these persons for individual help. The exercise helps individuals feel assured that they able to express their feelings and wishes as well as achieve a mutually desirable solution without a disruptive argument.
