Introduction

Computer technology has come to all but the smallest of Ameri­ can libraries. Some libraries have over twenty-five years of experi­ ence in coping with computers. The sophistication of many of our computer-based systems is truly remarkable, as computers become more mind-like. Nevertheless, computers are only tools, still to be used by human beings-who have yet to change to the extent of the tools. And as long as people are involved, there are personnel is­ sues.
