Personnel and Technology: An Opportunity for Innovation
Predicting the future in a society experiencing an accelerating rate of change is risky and fraught with danger in the best of circum stances. Change will affect libraries more dramatically than can be fully envisioned from the perspective of the last decade of the twen tieth century. Librarians can hypothesize about the future of li braries and the profession but cannot accurately speculate or fully comprehend the range of challenges and opportunities ahead. How ever, today’s library staff can anticipate that the rest of their careers will be spent in libraries that are undergoing dramatic change, change dictated by technology, by new approaches to research, by demands for information, by different means of accessing that in formation, by availability of resources.
