In May 1951, soon after the onset of the Cold War, an event took place that shook the leaders of the Western world and unnerved the general public. It involved the abrupt disappearance of a pair of British diplomats, Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean; two upper-class, Cambridge-educated men with lengthy, high profile careers.
