ABSTRACT
This chapter is concerned with two related topics: classification and quantification. At some level, classification is a prerequisite for quantification because objects have to be grouped into equivalence classes before they can be assigned quantitative labels in a consistent way. The lowest level of quantitative scale, the nominal scale, is really equivalent to classification. Therefore we will consider classification first, then proceed to quantification.
