ABSTRACT

It is always a great pleasure to read a paper by Marilynn Brewer, as one is assured of a cogent and thoughtful analysis of an important problem. This paper is no exception. Admiration is not equivalent to agreement, however, and there are a number of central assumptions of the present model that can be questioned. In the spirit of this new series, I offer these comments in the hope of clarifying or expanding the ideas put forth by Brewer. If these concerns represent a misreading of the model, I am confident of edification by Brewer's response, and if these represent a legitimate challenge to the model, they may help to stimulate thought that may clarify the process of impression formation.
