ABSTRACT

The primary purpose of conducting an assessment of a child referred to the school psychologist is to identify those behaviors that need to be changed to effectively solve the referral problem. The process of identifying these target behaviors using a behavioral assessment strategy has been described for problems in academic, behavioral/emotional, and adaptive behavior. Once the assessment strategies have pinpointed the appropriate target behaviors for change, procedures for treating these behaviors should be developed. The specific interventions derived are directly related to the findings of the assessment process. Data obtained during the assessment should serve as both pre-intervention measures against which behavior change can be compared when interventions have been applied, as well as offer continued repeated measures of behaviors during the application of the remediation techniques.
